Buck Vantage knives: Design Excellence!

20 04 2011

The Buck Vantage folding knives rock. They are high value, handsome, low profile, hard cutting designs that make stellar EDC choices. The Vantage also offers the buyer several options in steel and handle material: Vantage Select Large and Small with 420HC and sculpted Zytel scales; the Vantage Pro with S30V and sculpted G10 scales (good looking!); the Vantage Avid with 13C26 Sandvik® and again G10 scales. Large size Vantages have 3 1/4″ (8.3 cm) blades; the Small Vantage 2 5/8″ (6.7 cm) length. The looks on these knives are striking and yet provide solid ergonomics. The sculpted Zytel handles don’t provide a lot of traction but are good looking, light, and thin. The CNC contoured G10 scales on the Pro model add even better looks (the Avid features CNC contoured Charcoal Dymondwood® scales). The blade shape is superb and reminiscent of the uber-expensive Sebenza to me. It possesses a near-perfect form for all kinds of everyday cutting tasks with nice curvature (belly), sweep, swedge, polished flats, and a strong tip. It is hollow ground. Blade finishes are good with the S30V version showing a smoother satin finish with less pronounced striations. Any of the three steels offered should be excellent in role as well and I have been happy with the performance of my other Buck 420HC knives. Many will prefer the S30V Vantage Pro model for just a few more dollars/euros; it is an amazing value at around (price, models all subject to change without updates here). The Vantage

I picked up a Select model at a local Gander Mtn. here for around $30 (Gander Mtn. is always a little overpriced, but in this case, a few extra bucks was fine for the convenience). Anyway, and this is just my data point, but my Select model came perfectly centered and VERY sharp right out of the box. It’s interested to see that all of yours have had that problem. Also, the thumb hole is a little hard to use, but the flipper makes it fine (just my data point).

I inspected both pro models today at bass pro. Figured all the flaws would have been worked out by now for a great USA company, they are not! The blade was not centered, loose and not hair sharp. The liner lock was mis ground on one of them, this CAN NOT be easily corrected, it would need the liner replaced to fix this! The dymondwood scales version looked nice, but were very slick. expect to drop this knife. BTW the kershaw skyline was perfect.

All your videos are great!

I was wondering if you would do a review on the Buck 290 Rush knife? I’m a big Buck fan since they’re made in the USA and have a forever warranty.

Bought one, love it. No liner issue. S30v steel on the pro is tough to sharpen though, took lots of time with my med grit spyderco sharpener rods

Dude, Nutin’! Just saw the Buck SHOT 2011 booth review, and I realized that the thumb hole on my Buck Vantage Select is an Oxygen Bottle wrench!! Lol! That’s awesome.

I got mine two days ago, awesome knife! No liner problem on mine either!

I was surprised how small it was though! But I’ve been using my cutco folder forever and I still like that blade in size. However this knife is awesome and I’m starting to use it for EDC now.

would you go for the vantage or the bantam foe edc and camping or would you go for a different knife?

Just got one, Impulse buy. Actually came here afterwords to see if I made a good choice. Glad I got lucky and grabbed this beauty. I did get the econolite version made of some wierd composite though, and I felt it could have been skeletanized. If I were to skele it with a steel drill would it void the warranty?

I have the Pro, love the steel and and lay out. BUT this knife has pissed me off to no end! The clip screws always back out, the blade screw keeps backing out, and the badge fell out of the grip the first day. If it was a more solid knife I would recommend it, but I just can’t.
