MSR Pocket Rocket Camp Stove Review

2 04 2011

When Eddie (the Manager of Young’s Backpacking) first pulled out the MSR Pocket Rocket in its little case I thought he was joking. Smaller than a Coke can, the Pocket Rocket is insanely small and lightweight yet is able to perform most camp cooking/boiling duties. It’s also extremely easy to use and can be up and running in less than a minute. On top of that, the price tag puts it within reach of any camper/backpacker looking for a good reliable stove. Highly recommended! – Weighs just 3 oz. (85 g) – Dimensions: 4 x 2 x 2 in. (10.2 x 5. x 5.1 cm). (Weight includes stove, not the canister ) – Simple Operation: No need for priming, pressurizing, or maintenance. – High Heat Output: Boils 1 liter of water in under 3.5 minutes. – Full Flame Control: Glove-friendly controls allow precise flame adjustment, from a simmer to a boil. – Flame Protection: Tri-sectional Windclip™ wind shield protects flame and boosts efficiency. – Serrated pot-supports prevent the pot from shifting; folds up compact for travel – Burn time (MSR IsoPro) per 227-g / 8-oz. canisterAppx. 60 minutes – Boil time (MSR IsoPro), 1 liter3.5 minutes – Water boiled (MSR IsoPro) per 227-g canister16 liters – Water boiled (MSR IsoPro) per 1 oz. of fuel 2 liters – Made in Korea – AWARDS: The PocketRocket stove tied with the MSR WhisperLite stove as Backpacker Magazine Readers choice for the best camping stove in 2005 – MSRP ((Fuel canister sold separately)Special Thanks to YOUNGS BACKPACKING for hosting this

Does this fit on a 16.4 ounce propane tank? Or just the red container you have there?

Nice vid, good piece of kit, me and my mate work for blacks which is an outdoors store in the UK. He swears by the pocket rocket, where as I favour the coleman F1 lite, they’re both as small as each other but the F1 is a 2 piece construction which is detachable which I think makes cleaning easier and it packs down flat into a little bag which I think it better than the larger shaped container of the PR but I think because both units are so small anyway its a rather minor point.

my glowmaster iso-butane/propane stove like this one i got for 7 bucks at a yard sale only used once by this guy named larry. he included the stove and 7 canisters on fuel for 7 bucks. it works perfect, has a case to go along just like the one in the video above, has a built in ignition source, has a 2 cup of water boiling time of 3:30-4:00, is super lite, and is an inch shorter than a soda can. it rocks. i got a great deal

I own one of these and they are awesome. this thing rocks. heres my setup… sterilite uv pen/nalgene for pre filtering – coffee pot (standard type) – fill with water – place on top of pocket rocket – fire it up – add hot water to freeze dried food bags -. light weight, quick and hearty. a backpackers dream. 3 – 5 days easy without carrying around water, heavy food or bulky cookware. Happy trails.

That company is ruining itself with these lies, everyone who uses one knows it takes at least twice as long as they say, in wind it often takes over ten minutes. That gets real expensive

First of all, nice video it is very informative. I have a question though, how has your stability been on surfaces that aren’t flat? It seems like the stove would be somewhat top heavy.

ive got one of these with that size fuel source, and i have used it three times camping, twice to heat water for tea, and once to cook a backpackers pantry meal. worked great, had it on a low level and heated water 3 times to just under boiling. it probably took 10 minutes each to get the water that hot, but i didnt have a lid on my pot and was in 15, 30, and 55 degree weather each time.

@sungl0 what are you talking about? i happen to think that asians are beautiful and i am not an asin. you should watch more movies and you will see what i am talking about

@sungl0 Really? That’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard… There’s a lot of different Korean people (whom I find to all be beautiful), just like there’s many pretty and ‘unpretty’ western people. Please stop posting rude comments.

@sungl0 Not all asians got flat noses… Obviously… You haven’t been to Asia before. Take that negative attitude off.

@sungl0 so the highnoses people just come from the west? how many asian people have u seen so far? get rid of that petty minded.

sungl0

korean male actors aren’t manly and good looking when the roles call for it. is this after surgery looks? their highnoses don’t go with the rest of the flat asian faces.
