The iPhone 4 is now almost entirely sold out across every network and store in the UK

Since the June 24 launch of the latest iPhone, Apple has sold more than 1.7 million units, making the iPhone 4 the company’s most successful product launch, according to chief executive Steve Jobs.

Some Apple fans in Hong Kong, including visitors from China, couldn’t wait, and in some cases paid more than $3,000 for a gray-market iPhone 4. There are two types of gray-market iPhone 4s for sale: the locked U.S. model and an unlocked British version.

The locked U.S. models are going for $1,135 to $1,394, while the less-restricted unlocked iPhones start at a hefty $2,168 and go as high as $3,096.



TOKYO — Japan got an early taste of iPhone 4-fever on Tuesday as hundreds of people queued to place reservations for the new Apple cell phone. The iPhone 4 won’t go on sale until June 24, but carrier Softbank began accepting reservations for the phone from 5pm. About 200 people were waiting outside of Apple’s flagship store in Tokyo’s Ginza at 5pm, when the first 20 were ushered inside to place their orders.


  1. Sharper screen – 326 pixels per inch — four times that of previous Apple phones
  2. Gyroscope – can sense motion on six axes. The phone is basically more aware of where it is in the world, in relation to gravity, than it was before.
  3. Thickness – 9.3 millimeters (0.37 inches) thick, it is 24 percent thinner than the previous iPhone model, the 3GS. It is the thinnest smartphone on the market
  4. Camera flash – added an LED flash to the iPhone 4’s camera, which lets mobile photographers shoot photos and video more easily at night.
  5. Better camera – 5 megapixels of resolution, compared to 3 megapixels before. Also can shoots HD video, and a video-editing app called iMovie.
  6. Video conferencing – FaceTime video calling. Added a second camera in front, facing the user.
  7. Multitasking – operating system = iOS 4 (iPhone OS 4). Can listen to internet radio and check e-mail at the same time.
  8. Stainless steel antennae – a band of stainless steel goes around the edge as a trim is actually the antennae
  9. Guts – the A4 processor. Faster than competitors and faster than the processor in the iPhone 3GS. The high-end model stores 32 gigabytes of data
  10. Wireless carrier – Have contract from the local wireless carrier company
